Total hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which an artificial prosthesis is incorporated in place of a damaged hip joint. Before the operation, an MRI scan or X-ray may be performed in order to help determine what the problem with the hip is. In the hip surgery an incision is made at the joint and the damaged joint is removed by the orthopaedic or hip surgeon. The damaged joint is then replaced by an artificial joint made of ceramic or a metal alloy. Indications are hip bone fracture, cartilage injuries, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Complete recovery takes place within 2 to 6 months with physiotherapy sessions.
