The Harley Street Clinic Children’s Hospital - world class complex and critical care

The Harley Street Clinic
Harley Street Clinic, which for many years has been renowned internationally for its world class standards of cancer, cardiac and critical care for both adults and children, opens it new multi million pound Children’s Hospital today.

Following a major re-development and expansion programme lasting some two years, The Harley Street Clinic Children’s Hospital is not only unique in the UK private sector but is now one of the largest centres for children’s tertiary care in Europe.

Among the new facilities are the following:

  • An 18 bed paediatric ward.
  • A new 13 bed level three Intensive Care Unit
  • A five bed High Dependency Unit ( level two)
  • Britain’s newest Paediatric Haemato-Oncology Unit ( including a state of the art bone marrow transplant unit the only one in the UK private sector)
  • A dedicated children’s radiotherapy unit.
  • A bespoke day care unit which includes four chemotherapy chairs.

In addition, the hospital is developing a Paediatric House at 84 Harley Street, which will bring all children’s outpatient facilities under the same roof together with a children’s day care ward in the main hospital.

Currently the hospital has around 50 of London’s leading paediatric surgeons, oncologists, cardiologists, neuroscience and other specialist doctors, many of them holding senior positions at London’s renowned teaching hospitals.  More consultants are in the process of being signed up.

The £10 million plus development programme has been driven by increasing demand from both the UKand overseas for private complex care.  Neil Buckley is the Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer:

“The Harley Street Clinic has long been recognised as a centre of excellence for paediatric cardiac and cancer care in particular.  Increasingly however, our growing team of specialists have been treating the most complex, life threatening neurological and other conditions.

“At the same time the demand for more routine treatments for children has also grown exponentially so that now, there are very few medical conditions that we do not treat here.  The launch of this unique, brand new Children’s Hospital marks a milestone in the history of The Harley Street Clinic and I thank our doctors and staff for helping to make this happen,” said Mr Buckley.

The head of nursing for The Harley Street Children’s Hospital is Acting Chief Nursing Officer, Donna-Marie Henry.  “In both cardiac care and cancer care we have carried out the most complex new and groundbreaking life saving procedures that any other facility in the private sector could never attempt.

“One of the things that really sets us apart is the way we work together as a multi-disciplinary team.  Paediatric consultants, resident doctors, clinical nurse specialists, other nurses, dieticians, pharmacists, physiotherapists and other medical professionals - we all meet regularly to ensure each child receives optimum care.

“As for our nurses, well, I am very proud to be leading such a distinguished nursing team,” she said.
